Asset Managers frequently describe themselves as manufacturers to signal that they no longer have, or even wish to have a direct relationship with retail investors. Are we resigned to a pure B2B model, where advisers and platforms build stronger consumer-facing brands ? Surely retreating up the supply chain can only lead to 'factory gate pricing' and the inexorable rise of retailer power. If parallels with the grocery trade are true, only genuine power brands and niche specialists will survive. And is there a moral dilemma if we continue to overlook the best interests of the end investor.
